10th National Handloom Day Exhibition:

  • 10th National Handloom Day Handloom Exhibition started at ‘Handloom Haat’ in Janpath, Delhi.
  • Organized by the National Handloom Development Corporation under the Ministry of Textiles, the exhibition will be held till August 16.
  • National Handloom Day is celebrated on 7th August every year.
  • Swadeshi movement was started on 7th August 1905 to promote handloom weavers.
  • To promote handloom, the central government decided to celebrate 7th August every year as National Handloom Day.
  • Accordingly, the first National Handloom Day was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 7th August 2015 in Chennai.

Swadeshi Movement:

  • Swadeshi movement was started on 7th August 1905 to promote handloom weavers.
  • The Indian National Congress, one of the largest political parties in India, started this movement during the Indian freedom struggle.
  • In the Congress conference held in Calcutta in 1906, resolutions like Swarajyam, Swadeshi, National Education, and boycott of foreign goods were passed.
  • This gave rise to the Swadeshi movement.
  • People should not buy foreign goods and foreign clothes should be destroyed.
  • Swadeshi Movement aims to buy and use locally produced goods.
  • This movement spread the swadeshi movement all over India.
  • Swadeshi movement is a movement to ignore foreign goods by giving preference to goods and services produced in the home country.
  • It was one of the tactics used by the freedom fighters against the British government during the Indian freedom movement

“Vergalai Thedi” Scheme:

  • On behalf Commissionerate of Rehabilitation and Welfare of Non Resident Tamils, under the program ‘Vergalai Thedi’, the college students Tamil origin visited Mamallapuram Beach Temple, Ancient Monuments, Sculpture College.
  • According to this project, Tamil youths between 18 to 30 years of age will be selected and brought to Tamil Nadu and will be invited to the historical places of Tamil Nadu on behalf of the Tamil Nadu government to feel the pride of Tamil and Tamils.
  • Based on this, last year, the first phase of the cultural travel program involving Tamil youths to four countries was implemented by Commissionerate of Rehabilitation and Welfare of Non Resident Tamils.
  • This year’s trip will be taken from 1st to 15th August with 100 diaspora Tamil youth from 15 countries namely South Africa, Uganda, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Fiji, Indonesia, Mauritius, Australia, Maldives, Canada, Myanmar, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, France and Germany.

August 5: International Amnesty Day

  • International Forgiveness Day is observed on August 5 by The Worldwide Forgiveness Alliance.
