Fencing on India-Myanmar border:
- Manipur’s Kuki tribal organizations have protested against the central government’s proposals to fence the India-Myanmar border and abolish the practice of mutual freedom of movement up to a specified distance.
- Under the 2018 agreement, people living near the India-Myanmar border are allowed to travel up to 16 km from each other without proper documents.
- Along with cancelling this agreement, the central government also decided to fence the 1,643 km India-Myanmar border along the states of Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
- The central government said that through this, immigrants and smugglers of drugs and gold can be stopped in India.
