National Health Mission to be extended for another 5 years.

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the extension of National Health Mission (NHM) for another five years for improving public health services in the country.
  • The National Health Mission (NHM) was launched in 2013 by merging the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM).
  • Under Mission Indradhanush, more than 34.77 crore children have been vaccinated.
  • Under the Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Mission, more than 4.53 lakh beneficiaries have been covered during 2023-24.
  • Under the Sickle Cell Anemia Eradication Campaign, more than 2.61 crore tests have been conducted in tribal areas.
  • The National Health Mission (NHM) has contributed significantly to the improvement of public health services in the country through its efforts in expanding human resources in the health sector, addressing critical health issues and finding integrated solutions to health emergencies.

‘Save the girl child, educate the girl child “

  • The ‘Save the Girl Child, Educate the Girl Child’ programme, one of the flagship programmes of the Government of India, has completed 10 years.
  • The scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 22, 2015, to address the challenges related to declining girl child sex ratio and ensuring seamless empowerment of women in the country.
  • With this, the enrollment of girls in schools has increased.
  • The sex ratio has also seen unprecedented progress.

Sexual Harassment Bill:

  • The new bill was passed in the Assembly to give priority to the safety of women and children.
  • Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi has given his assent to a bill that proposes stringent punishment in rape cases.
  • After the President’s assent, the bill will be sent to the Rajya Sabha for approval.

The new sexual assault law:

  • He was sentenced to a minimum of 10 years in prison before the rape, but is currently serving a minimum of 14 years in prison.
  • If a close relative (a) is involved in a sexual assault by a police personnel, the minimum punishment is 20 years in jail as against 10 years earlier.
  • Rape of a girl below the age of 12 years is punishable by a minimum of 20 years imprisonment (a) life imprisonment (b) death sentence.
  • He is currently serving a life sentence, having previously been sentenced to a minimum of 20 years in prison for sexual assault and causing death.
  • He is currently serving a life sentence for rape.
  • Repeated offenders are currently sentenced to death, having previously been sentenced to life imprisonment.
