Cauvery-Vaigai-Gundaru interlinking issue

The Supreme Court has refused to stay the Karnataka government’s decision to implement the Cauvery-Vaigai link project.

The Government of Karnataka has been promoting this scheme since its inception in the year 2020.

The foundation stone for the Cauvery-Vaigai-Gundaru Link Project was laid in February, 2021 to divert the surplus water from the Cauvery River at Maayanur Barrage in Karur District and connect the dry areas of Trichy, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Sivagangai and Virudhunagar districts to gundaru by cutting and dredging the Basanak Canal to provide water and land to these areas.

National Mission on Rare Minerals:

  • Union Minister of Mines G. Kishan Reddy said that the National Mission on Rare Minerals (CMM) will be launched soon.
  • Kishan Reddy inaugurated the 3rd National Mining Ministers Conference at Konark, Odisha.
  • He also released a booklet on ‘Best Practices for Closing Mines’ during the conference.
  • The conference awarded the states with the highest number of mining bids for the financial year 2023-2024.
  • Rajasthan is at the top, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
  • The mission will be launched with an aim to promote mining in coastal areas while ensuring domestic production of rare minerals and reducing imports.
  • The Union Cabinet will soon approve the National Mission on Rare Minerals, after which the Government of India will launch the Mission.
  • Rare minerals include lithium, cobalt, copper, nickel, and rare earth elements.
  • These are considered important in the production of defense logistics and modern technologies.
  • Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha were present on the occasion.

Makkaludan Mudhalvar Scheme

  • In order to take the services of the government to the people, the Makkaludan Mudhalvar scheme was started with the people.
  • The scheme was launched on December 18, 2023.
  • The scheme aims to bring government services to the doorsteps of the people within 30 days of receiving applications from them.
